Every fall, Schweitzer-Mauduit Canada purchases up to 200,000 acres of flax from over 700 flax growers.
Each year, our straw buying activities contribute more than $5 million dollars to the rural economy in payments to producers and suppliers.
The straw purchase team consists of close to 20 seasonal Field Buyers who inspect fields from our buying areas in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Dakota.
Producers are allowed to not only sell their straw laying on the field but are given the first opportunity for baling and trucking their flax.
Schweitzer-Mauduit Canada works with both the Manitoba Flax Growers Association and the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission regarding the straw check-off which helps fund research into more flax fiber uses.
Flax straw that once was considered a detriment on the farm, is now leading the way in helping farmers contribute to the new bio-economy.
