Low Ignition Propensity Papers

The Challenge
Governments in an increasing number of countries have set safety performance standards on cigarettes in order to reduce the likelihood of fire. Global cigarette manufacturers must comply with these regulatory requirements that require cigarettes possess self-extinguishing capabilities as a fire safety feature. Not only must the cigarettes meet these governmental requirements, but they also must remain taste-neutral and not interfere with consumer preferences.

Our Solution
SWM pioneered LIP papers to meet this industry need. Our engineers implemented “bands” on the LIP paper to create areas of low air flow, causing self-extinguishment if the cigarette is not actively smoked. Our portfolio includes two options for designers: Alginex® our water-based technology and starch-based GlucigenTM. Thanks to these ground-breaking innovations, today, designers can create cigarettes that meet global Fire Safety Compliant standards with a low percentage of Free Air Self Extinguishment (FASE), while continuing to deliver a smoking experience for their consumers. Our innovative LIP papers represent a step forward in helping cigarette manufacturers gain compliance without compromising the important product attributes their customers prefer.
