Building and Contruction

SWM materials hide behind the scenes, but provide essential performance.

About this market

SWM netting, yarn, fibers, films, nonwovens, and paper provide distinctive functionalities to diverse products and composites used in building and construction applications.

SWM offers an extensive portfolio of engineered solutions and advanced materials for diverse building and construction applications.  Manufacturers, OEMs, and converters thrive on the versatility our materials bring to create superior composites used in everyday construction projects.   For additional information about our extensive materials portfolio, please contact our team. We’ll be glad to collaborate on your next building and construction project.

Films
SWM has a wide range of films that can be used in building and construction applications to reinforce, protect, contain, and laminate other materials.  As the leading manufacturer of extruded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films, SWM offers superior customization capabilities to meet your product development requirements. Netting
SWM netting is used to reinforce, stretch, contain, and laminate different types of substrates. It is also often used with films to create composites requiring extra strength. Manufacturers of green building products utilize SWM netting in their product designs to achieve energy efficiencies, reduce cost, and improve overall performance.

Green building products are designed to help reduce energy consumption and create energy efficiencies. From radiant barriers that help reduce summer heat gain, and winter heat loss, to insulation sheathing boards that function as protective covers to increase thermal performance, SWM netting can deliver diverse functionalities. If you have a product development project for any green building application, please contact our team and let us collaborate to find potential efficiencies in your product design.

SWM Netting Functionalities

  • Protect, reinforce, support, contain, separate, grip, laminate, and bond different components and materials.
  • Reduce cost, weight, height, thickness, and overall size of products.
  • Save energy, material, and production process time.
  • Separate elements that need gaps to achieve superior performance.
  • Provide composite capabilities with paper, film, foam, nonwoven, and other fabrics.

Flooring

Manufacturers use SWM netting in flooring underlayment and radiant floor projects. Durable and long-lasting, our netting is designed to replace traditional, more expensive metal lath used in flooring (especially for tile underlayment). Unlike metal lath, plastic lath does not have sharp corners and edges that will cut or tear. Made from a polyolefin base, our plastic netting lath can be easily trimmed to fit into any shaped space and will not rust. SWM plastic netting lath works with electric and hot water radiant floor heating systems.
House Wraps SWM netting.JPG

House Wraps

When SWM netting is combined with other substrates to form house wrap products, it serves as the water drainage element that guides water down the wall. Our netting strands function as a unique water channeling element that helps prevent moisture build-up in walls, minimizing the risk of mold and other moisture problems in homes. Whether it is changing the netting configuration, size, weight or height, we can tailor our process to match precise performance requirements.

Insulation Netting

SWM netting is commonly used to hold insulation in place inside a home or building. Insulation can be installed or blown in and contained securely in place by tacking our netting to structure studs or under floor joists. Using our netting components under joists in decks and other outdoor buildings can also prevent unwanted animals from building nests or destroying structures.

Insulation Sheathing

When SWM netting is bonded to other materials, it delivers superior strength and reinforcement functionalities that improve tear resistance and breakload targets. Manufacturers thrive on using our netting portfolio due to the endless possibilities to create superior composites. Other added-value capabilities such as having adhesive within the plastic netting configuration facilitates thermal lamination processes and can help reduce production costs.
Radiant barrier.jpg

Radiant Barriers

Radiant barriers are materials that are installed in buildings to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss. Their main goal is to reduce building heating and cooling energy usage. The potential benefit of attic radiant barriers is reducing air-conditioning cooling loads in warm or hot climates. SWM netting can be incorporated to provide reinforcement, separation and support to form strong yet lightweight radiant barrier composites.
Rain Screens SWM netting.JPG

Rain Screens

Rain Screen is the exterior weather-facing surface of an exterior wall that stands off from the moisture resistant surface, creating a draining cavity. In other words, it is the first line of protection against the effects of moisture on the wall detail. SWM netting can be used as the element that provides essential water channeling and gapping to the entire wall system.
Roofing Underlayment. SWM netting.JPG

Roofing

Synthetic roofing underlayment materials are a competitive alternative to traditional materials like tar papers. Tar papers are often smoother, creating a slippery and potentially dangerous surface for installers. SWM netting, on the other hand, can be designed with thick nodes on one side to create a superior anti-slip surface and a built-in adhesive in the netting configuration to facilitate thermal lamination with other substrates. Roofing underlayment composites with SWM netting can enhance overall strength and performance while providing a safety element for installers.
Stucco plastic lath. Conwed netting.JPG

Stucco Lath

Stucco systems are complex building products made of diverse layers of materials and components. SWM netting can potentially replace metal and wood lath layers depending on the final product application. Stucco systems manufacturers continue to improve stucco products ; our netting components provide an alternative to metal, wood and other plastic composites for gapping and support functionalities.
