About Engineered Composite Material

What is a Composite Material?

A composite material is a combination of two materials with different physical and chemical properties. When they are combined they create a material which is specialized to do a certain job, for instance to become stronger, lighter or resistant to electricity. They can also improve strength and stiffness.

SWM Manufactures Composite Materials

SWM Engineered Composite Materials are found in most leading wound care products, including components in finger bandages, surgical dressings, and surgical drapes. The capabilities behind our engineered composites may be expanded with the introduction of additional materials, like netting, nonwovens or apertured film, in order to meet individual customer need.

For example, our collection of extruded nets, apertured films and meltblown nonwovens are used to enhance textile performance characteristics and facilitate material processing. Our uniform thermoplastic products can be used to provide additional strength to woven fabrics. They can be slit or cut easily without unraveling or shedding fibers, an extremely beneficial quality for reinforcing delicate or expensive fabrics. Our products can also be thermoformed with heavy textiles and foams. Whether the molding is done for structural or aesthetic purposes, it will maintain its integrity under the most demanding conditions.

Our unique materials respond quickly and react consistently in many different bonding situations. These products can effectively combine materials without shrinking or distorting. Plus, the precise geometric mesh patterns are difficult to detect, even against light colored fabrics. Co-extruded films are excellent for bonding dissimilar materials. Plus, our products are easier to handle and offer a cost-effective alternative to chemical adhesives.

Our Delstar (formerly Stratex) Engineered Composites, non-adherent and non-linting structures, are created by laminating multiple layers of nets, nonwovens or textiles to create complex materials. These composites differ in their absorbency, loft, wicking, repellency, release and barrier properties. SWM composites are found in most leading wound care products, including components in finger bandages/plasters, surgical dressings, surgical drapes and face masks. Product capabilities may be expanded with the introduction of additional materials alone or in combination with Delnet Apertured Films to meet individual customer needs.

Delstar™ Composite for Inner Panel and Dust Cover

Our Delstar™ Composite for Inner Panel (formerly LAMINET®) Inner Panel is our heavier duty composite of specialty netting and nonwoven. This composite increases stability between the pillow top and the mattress unit for a more tailored look and improved product performance. Delstar is an ideal dust cover composite. In the bedding industry, a dust cover is a woven or nonwoven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. It may also be known as sheeting or cambric. Delstar also offers excellent tear resistance, minimum sagging, superior holding power and reduced damage risk during product shipping and handling.
